We get asked by a lot of homeowners here at Park Lane if they should replace their old windows with uPVC windows. So if you have been thinking about replacing yours then here are some answers to common questions and queries people have before installing their windows.
What Are uPVC Windows?
uPVC windows are a type of window which is made from the uPVC substance. Their modern technology and design have made them a popular substance for windows, and very attractive to homeowners due to them being affordable, low maintenance, and a fantastic insulator. The windows are available in varying colours, therefore, if your house is a more traditional style you could still opt for the warm wooden effect. Because the windows require such little upkeep this ensures they will look their best for years to come and always as good as the day they were fitted.
How Are uPVC Windows Made?
The first thing to understand when answering the question of possibly replacing your current windows is that uPVC windows are made up of 3 elements.
The frame is made up of two parts, the frame that fits into the window opening and the frame that holds the glass together. They are both made of uPVC which has many benefits over the old timber frames that they often replace. They are also much lower maintenance and will not flake, crack, or warp over time.
Sealed Glass Unit
This is the soul of the uPVC window and consists of two or sometimes three panes of glass with a gap between them that is either a vacuum or is filled with dehydrated gas to reduce heat transfer and create an airtight sealed unit. A bar is put in place and this holds the glass a fixed distance apart and the sealant is then applied to hold the glass together to stop vapour entering the unit. Ventilation agent is combined into the spacer bar of the unit to capture any dampness that passes through the unit.
The Window Mechanism
The window instruments are the hinges, handles and locks that are attached to both the exterior border and the window edge itself. These also have a great life expectancy.

Advantages Of uPVC Windows
uPVC windows are becoming increasingly popular due to the number of benefits they bring. The windows will last a lifetime, with very little maintenance needed at all and at the end of their lifespan they can be recycled, reducing their environmental impact. Some more benefits of the uPVC windows are below:
uPVC does not rot and is resistant to corrosion.
uPVC windows are very low maintenance, the edges don’t require painting or coating which reduces the maintenance required over their lifetime by a considerable amount. They are easily cleaned with water and a damp cloth.
uPVC is a non-conductive material meaning its use in the window frame does not hand over any heat and, consequently, contributes to a more consistent internal temperature for a property.
uPVC windows include a multi-locking system providing a very high level of safety in a home or business.
